As part of Slow Food International, and in partnership with Buy Fresh Buy Local – South Dakota, we are hosting a community-wide pot luck on Labor Day, September 7 from 5:00-7:30 at the National Guard Armory (603 Princeton).
This Eat-In is one of hundreds taking place on the same date across the nation to promote healthy, real food in schools and draw attention to the Child Nutrition Act, up for reauthorization this year. There will be kids activities, vendors with local produce, and lots of food. Come out for a great time with family and friends.
Bring a dish, preferably one that is made from local foods and/or is not highly processed. If you have a recipe for local foods in mind, send it to drschweinle@hotmail.com for inclusion in a free recipe book to be available at the pot luck.

One of our vendors called to inform me that he’ll have 150 pounds of canning tomatoes to sell in bigger or smaller quantities. Have you put up your salsa or sauce yet?
Jams and jellies, baked goods, and a load of other produce and wonderful homegrown and homemade items will also be available.
See you at the market!

It’s a lamb week, and coupled with the first of the tomatoes and the second week of sweet corn, this promises to be a yummy market, indeed!
Stock up this week because our market takes a hiatus next week during the Clay County Fair (maybe a good time to check out the other local markets: Elk Point on Tuesday evening, Yankton and Spink on Saturday).
Have you started thinking about winter yet? I just got a bill that’s due in September, which snapped me awake about how quickly summer is dwindling.
Gary Bye has been selling sacks of storage potatoes (Yukons and Reds) for a great price! If you have a cool-ish dark place, you might think about grabbing a few extra sacks of potatoes for the winter months, as well as a few extra dozen ears of sweet corn for freezing. Onions and garlic keep well, too!
But don’t forget about the tasty fruits of summer–zucchini and peppers, fingerling potatoes and eggplant for roasting!
See you at the market!
